How to tell it's done

A thick, creamy, and velvety smoothie with a smooth banana-oat body.

Getting it right

Tip

Using overripe bananas adds natural sweetness, which allows you to reduce or even completely skip the honey.

What to serve it with

Serve as a quick on-the-go morning breakfast drink or a light pre-workout smoothie.

Common mistakes

The smoothie is gritty.
Blend the oats dry first, on their own, until they are a fine powder. Oats added whole to liquid never break down completely however long the blender runs.
It thickens into a paste within minutes.
Oats keep absorbing milk after blending. Drink it straight away, or blend it a little looser than you want it if you know it will sit.

Substitutions

  • Any plant milk works for a vegan version; oat milk keeps it closest to the original thickness.
  • Dates blended in can replace the honey and add body at the same time.

Storing and reheating

Drink immediately. It keeps overnight in the fridge in a sealed jar but sets very thick and the banana darkens — stir in a splash of milk and accept the colour. Do not freeze.
